Valerie Stewart, together with Joan Crossley- Holland, founded the Oxford Gallery in 1968 (closed 2001). Valerie's main interest was in jewellery and metalwork and through the gallery she played an important role in promoting a number of extremely talented young artists, including Jane Short. The imagery of the vase is based on light and movement in landscape and inspired by the perspective in Paolo Uccello's 'Hunt in the Forest' (see Highlights of the Ashmolean).

Information derived from T. Schroder, British and Continental Gold and Silver in the Ashmolean (2009)
